Show Fine Paid With Welfare Loan of $25 A hippie calling himself a minister was cited March 5 by Utah Highway Patrolman Patrol-man Scott Skidmore for driving without a driver's license. ' ; The man, Michael Hunt, 26, was on his way to Overland, Over-land, Missouri with his wife from California. They were taken to Moab for questioning question-ing after getting a five-day jail sentence or $25 by Justice Jus-tice of the Peace Al Lang. The Hunts, after arriving at the Grand County Courthouse Court-house applied for financial help from the Welfare Department De-partment which is in the same building. They were given $25 with which they paid their fine and went on their way. Welfare Director William Canning said it was not the intention of the Department of Welfare to pay the fine of this offender. v Under state and federal regulations the Welfare Department De-partment is authorized to help transients or stranded families get to their destination. destin-ation. The local office has had only three or four cases of transients needing help within the past six months, Canning said. The usual procedure pro-cedure is to buy a bus ticket tick-et for the wife and children of the family and allow them to go on to their destination, the man to' follow after when he has been able to receive financial help . from other sources, such as from relatives or a church. The general procedure depends on the circumstances. In the case of the Hunls, the $25 was given as a loan, with the promise they would reimburse the allowance in a few days. |
