Show i ' ' i ' in m m m r - - il - mi mi mm n i -A. - Ruth and Wilhclm Simon, from Hamburg. Germany, spent a week in Moab recently during their annual trip to the United States. They have made two trips into Canyonlands, including a 9 hour trip around Island in the Sky and Walking Rocks, and plan to return again next vr.ir German Visitors Enjoyed Stay in Canyon Country Flown into Moab on the "little grasshopper", Ruth and Wilhclm Simon arrived Friday, May 16. from Hamburg, Ham-burg, Germany for their annual trip to the United Slates which began with a visit in 1969. The "little grasshopper" is Mr. Simon's name for the small plane of Sun Valley Key Airlines that brought them lo Moab from Grand Junction which he said they enjoyed very much as a new and unusual experience. Dr. Simon is a retired geologist who was employed by the Federal Geological Survey of the Federal State of Germany for many years. His wife also has a doctorate degree in history, and although she has never 'u rn employed, she has ked along with her hnsbai . and aided him in his re ' ' .irch at times. The Simon's have three grown children, two of whom live in the United Stall's. 1 ' cir first trip to Die Stales uas made to visit their son who lives near Philadelphia nt Kunnenicdc, Pa. Since then, they have been buck every year and have always made it a point to visit the Moab area afler discovering the beauty of the Canyonlands, Arches, and many other natural wonders which thry continue to marvel over. While here this spring they were thoroughly delighted to he able lo hike up lo Delicate Arch in Arches National Park. They speak of this time in their lives as the most rewarding ever because of such dreams becoming realities. After leaving Moab, the Simons planned to travel to Gallup, New Mexico where they were lo visit friends. Of particular interest to them is the American Indian and they were hoping to visit the reservation while there. An interesting experience the Simons muse over is an encounter with the Aroquois Indians in Canada. They related their amusement of a slight generation gap between the chief, who asked Dr. Simon if he would give his scalp, as compared lo his son. a lawyer, who dons his feather headdress after hours. The Simons left Friday. May 2.1. When i,uk in Germany Mr. Simon' will be teaching geology in evening classes al Hamburg. |
