Show Red Cross fund drive disappointing here Red Cross Fund Drive Chairman for Grand County, Kathy Hopkins, reported a rather disappointing disap-pointing total of $303.78 collected in the two-week drive, March 13-27. The funds collected come nowhere near the $2000 goal set by the local chapter, and Ms. Hopkins stated that some of the programs in Moab will suffer unless monetary or equipment donations are made by interested in-j in-j dividuals or gToups. Said Ms. Hopkins, "Of the $303.78 collected, half must be sent to the national nation-al Red Cross, leaving our funds even more short. But," she added, "if persons per-sons wish to donate money mon-ey to be used only in Grand County, all that is necessary is to enclose a note designating the check to a certain local Red Cross program (Water (Wat-er Safety, First Aid, Armed Forces, or Disaster)." Disas-ter)." One particular Moab Red Cross program in real need of help is First Aid, chaired by Jerry Epperson. Epper-son. First aid courses, taught by 19 qualified instructors in Moab, are available both to local citizens and to Grand County students. In 1977 a total of 311 students were taught in Red Cross First Aid classes, and to date in 1978, there have been 159 students. Mr. Epperson, a Nat. Park Service employee, has been able to borrow equipment from the NPS for his classes, but feels that it would be much better for the local chapter to have its own supplies. Supplies and equipment needed to instruct the basic, standard, and advanced ad-vanced first aid classes, along with a CPR (cardiopulmonary (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) course are: blankets, splints, and practice dummies dum-mies for CPR. Mr. Epperson also stated that the Red Cross offers first aid courses as a community service--anyone may sign up with him for classes and the only cost to students is books needed for the course. Chairman Epperson Epper-son may be contacted at 259-7589. |
