Show atoms underground Z Understanding of nuclear energy as a benefactor rather I than a destroyer of the human race is something that will take a long time to acquire. Already peaceful applications of nuclear energy have advanced much farther than we realize. The innate intelligence of man is directing destructive destruc-tive nuclear forces to constructive channels.' Working in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Com-- Com-- mission, the energy of the sun nuclear fusion is being " brought under control by various industries notably in the I field of electric power generation and in the oil and gas ; industry. An industrial pamphlet entitled "Giant in the I Earth" describes the methods by which underground nuc-I nuc-I lear explosions are used to create cavities in the earth for I stimulation of gas production. The cavities may also be used for other purposes. Notes the pamphlet, "The creation of deep underground storage cavities is a straightforward application of nuclear explosives; it can provide controlled ; containment for large volumes of commercial gases or in-; in-; dustrial waste. Storage chambers can be made in salt sec-; sec-; tions or any other type of rock with an impermable cap ; above the top . . . The principle of creating tremendous ; volumes of broken rock may also be used to leach minerals I in-place without expensive ore body movement." As with most other instances of human ingenuity, the T results of the discovery of nuclear energy will, in all likelihood, likeli-hood, mean the creation of entire new industries and the opening of new opportunities for employment and substan-; substan-; tial increases in productivity and taxable revenues for government. gov-ernment. . jaJ?3fcS?lIS3g J |
