Moot- was making some gced defensive plays ar.d holding the Bucks cn long yardage? situations, which paid off. The first period per-iod end.d in a 0-0 deadlock, reminiscent of the 1970 series ser-ies of games played by the two t-.ams when both games ended in a 13-13 deadlock. The Devils, however, were not to be denied a win as they came out and iorced the Bucks to fumble, picked up by Steve Wyatt, who replaced replac-ed Roberts as quarterback. They started to move the ball' and Pete' Davis carried to the 1 yar dline, .with Holland Hol-land carrying the ball over for the touchdown. The try for the extra point, a pass, was no good. The Devils led 6-0 and were never in trouble trou-ble after that. Rain started to come down heavily during' the second quarter and made the ball slippery. However, the Devils still were able to take to the. air and Steve Stout caught a pass on' the 11 yard line for a 20 yard gain. Holland followed that up with his second of three TD"s of the day. A pass to Kevin Hansen for two points was good and made the score 14-0. Monticello could not . get an offensive drive to hold and had to kick the ball. Steve Wyatt- got a good run-back run-back of about 45 yards to put the Devils in good scoring position again. Led with good blocking, the Devils went to the 5 yard line and Hansen scored from there- to give Moab a 20-0 lead. Stout added a point with a kick for the extra point. Before the end of the half, Moab launched one more strong drive to the 3, but a series of basted plays and a penalty shut them out. The score at the end of the first half was 21-0 for the Devils. Gene Roberts came back in at quarterback and put the Devils on the scoreboard again with another touchdown touch-down by Gregg Holland, an 11 yard romp around left end to make the score 27-70. Steve Wyatt again held and Stout split the goal posts to make it 28-0 during the third quarter. At this time, coach Glen Richeson started making substitutions sub-stitutions to give younger members of the squad some 'needed experience. Ron Bo-wen Bo-wen replaced Pete Davis at fullback and Stan Holland and Mike Walterschicd also were moved into the back-field back-field to get some playing time. Nearly all other positions posi-tions were filled with junior and soph players with both groups doing a good job. Ron Bowen scored the next TD for the Devils and the extra point was good to make the score 35-0. Steve Stout attempted a 53 yard field goal that was short, but a penalty against the Bucks gave the Devils another chance at the first down. Davis Da-vis picked up 6 yards to put the ball in good position and then Sophomore quarterback Bo Johnson entered the game and tried unsuccessfully to lead the Devils to another TD. A pass into the area of the three yard line was caught but out of bounds, and another was missed near the end of the game. With the count 4th and 13 yards to go, Steve Stout kicked a 21 yard field goal to make the final score 38-0 and a big opening game victory for the Devils. The next game will be against the Cortez, Colorado high schol Panthers at 8 p.m. Friday at Cortez.
