Show Student Vision Defect Clinics Shted Parents of preschool youngsters young-sters in Moab will have an opportunity to find out if their youngster has any vision defects and to have the defect corrected before the child starts school, according to an announcement made by Dick Robertson, project chairman. Vision screening tests For preschool children will be conducted by teams of volunteers volun-teers from the Lions Club. These volunteers have been trained by the State Health Department Ophthalmologist, the sight conservation consultant, consul-tant, Utah Commission for the Blind, and a representative of the Utah Society for the Prevention of Wimlncv,. Mrs. Hannah l'ittman. public pub-lic health nurse, said the free vision testing will begin on Tuesday, March 16 from 9:30 to 1 1:30 a.m. Object of the free screening is to detect vision defects in children as early as possible. The National Society for the Prevention of Blindness strongly recommends that a child's eyes should be tested before he reaches school age so that any Vision difficulty can be corrected before he begins his education. The volunteers will work in teams. They will test the child's vision with an "E" chart. If his performance leads them to suspect a vision difficulty the youngster will then be "referred." This means a notice is sent to his parents advising of the need for a thorough, professional eye examination. Later there will be a follow-up of each referral to make sure each child has had a professional eye examination. The .. ision testing project in Moab is the latest link in the growing network of such programs being carried out throughout the United States in cooperation with the National Nation-al Society of the Prevention of Blindness. Since 1953, hundreds hund-reds of unpaid volunteers have tested the vision of more than 165.000 preschool children in 78 cities and 22 states. Approximately Five per cent of them have been found to have vision defects. Remember! Time is the important factor. A child's sharp central vision is developed develop-ed by the time he is 6' to 7 years of age. Best corrective results are obtained for the child with defective vision while his eyes are still developing this central vision. Preschool screening for children 3 ' - 4 - or 5 years of age will help detect many young children when professional profes-sional treatment is most beneficial. |
