Show Grand Cancer Crusade Now Underway Here The annual Grand County Cancer Drive got underway this week under direction of Grand County Chairman, Mrs. Colleen Taylor and a capable staff of assistants. A goal of $2,000 has been set as a midway mark between be-tween the peak fund drive in 1962 which netted $2,690 and the smallest county con triution last year of $1, 435.21. The money will aid in research re-search for the breakthrough of Cancel- control, as well as contributing to Cancer stricken str-icken victims in the area. In 1965-66 nearly $500 was used for direct financial aid to victims of the disease which claimed six Grand County residents. 'Because of the excellent volunteer program in Utah, only 3.1 percent of Crusade funds raised in 1966 went into administration costs An education program is conducted simultaneously with the fund raising drive each year. Films will be shown, and lectures presented pre-sented on warning signals for the disease. A five-year objective has been outlined by the American Cancer So-jety, So-jety, urging "Pap"' smear tests for at least 75 percent of all women over 21 years of age; incorporation of Proctoscopic Pro-ctoscopic examination into the regular physical examination exam-ination among at least 30 percent of the general public; pub-lic; the practice of breast self-examination by at least 50 percent of all women; use of oral cancer detection programs by 50 percent of medical and dental professions; profes-sions; reduction of cigarette cigaret-te smoking among teenagers teen-agers by 50 percent; among the general public by 25 percent; per-cent; and among physicians by 50 percent. Also on the 5-year goal is wide-spread dissemination of skin cancer information to aid in prevention of excessive ex-cessive exposure to sunlight and environmental hazards; greater support of recommended recom-mended research projects by increasing the Society's research re-search expenditures by 50 percent; and raising a 1970 minimum of $60 million of which at least $48 million comes from Crusade, and $12 million from Legacies. The Utah Division of the American Cancer Society recognizes that actual care of the cancer patient must sometimes be augmented by assistance in his rehabilitation. rehabilita-tion. Funds, within limits, are therefore provided for artificial limbs, braces, and other prosthesis, as well as speech therapy, etc. Dressings are available free upon request for home and hospital cancer patients and an invaluable service provided with the annual contributions is maintaince of a loan closet where supplies sup-plies and sick-room equipment equip-ment may toe used for cancer can-cer patients on a loan basis (Mrs. Taylor urges the traditional supfport to the vital program by Grand Co. residents throughout the month of April.
