Kenator Dillingham was defending the Mormon church authorities, when Mr. Dubois interrupted to ask if tha Senator from Vermont meant to say that the Mormon church authorities had lived npa to the promises they made at the time of the Amnesty proclamation. "I know of no violation of the amnesty am-nesty condition," replied . Dillingham. "The Senator - heard Joseph Smith, President of the church, testify before the committee that he was living in violation of lawt" inquired Mr. Dubois. Du-bois. "Yes, I. heard it," replied Dillingham. Dil-lingham. , .. At this point, Hopkins of Illinois came to the aid of his colleague. "Joseph Smith is not on trial here, if lie is violating the law, let the 8enator file a complaint against him. under tha laws of Utah, ana not eome here and eharge an-innocent man with violating the law." Later, in his speech, Mr. Dillingham made the statement that there was not a polygamist holding a Federal office in Utah. , , "Do you Include k polygamist wife la the term polygamist!" inquired Mr. Dubois. , Mr. Dillingham said he did, whereupon where-upon Mr. Dubois told Kim that at tha time he introduced .and tha Senate passed a resolution calling on the Post-office Post-office Department -to inform the Sonata whether there were any polygamists holding postoffice appointments, that a, numbar of postmasters in Idaho and Utah resigned and allowed .non-polyga-mists to be appointed and later the polygamist po-lygamist wives were appointed, supplanting sup-planting the monogamous - officers ad-interim. ad-interim. . , .At this point Senator Sutherland declared de-clared there was not a polygamist holding hold-ing office in Utah. Mr. Dubois promptly replied that he had the fact of one case in his pockets. Sutherland demanded that he give the Senate the names. Mr. Dubois replied that he intended to speak later and would choose hisown time and 'place for giving the facts. |
