Show KINGSTON'S DEAD IS NEARLY 1 100 Residents of StricKen City Denounce Gov. Swetten-ham Swetten-ham and Appeal to Parliament Par-liament for Loan. KINGSTON, Jamaica, Feb. 20. A mass meeting of citizens Monday night condemned Gov. Swettenham for re- fusing to receive monetary assistance. The. meeting adopted a petition to Parliament for a grant of $750,000 and a loan of $5,000,000 to assist 1 in the rebuilding of the city. Plans are now bn foot for rebuilding a vastly improved Kingston. AH the principal thoroughfares in the commercial commer-cial section will be widened, and Little Port Boyal street, the nearest the harbor front, will be abolished. Owing to its narrowness, this street proved a veritable death-trap at the time of the earthquake. It is proposed to dispose of the thousands of tons of debris by using the stuff in the construction of a great sea wall along the harbor front. Oead bodies are still being recovered from the ruins, and while the actual number of killed will never be known, the total cannot fall short of 1100. |
