Show TEACHERS FAVOR MARKS' MEASURE Levy Provided by State Totally Inadequate to Meet Needs of Growing Salt LaKe Schools. An enthusiastic meeting of the executive,' exe-cutive,' advisory and special committees of the City Teachers' association was held yesterday afternoon at the Oquirrh school. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss H.B. 217, which was introduced by Representative Marks. The present school law 'provides for a maximum leyy of 5Vq mills for the maintenance fund in cities of the first class. It was shown that this levy is inadequate to meet the demands of a rapidly growing grow-ing school system like that of Salt Lake City and hence the necessity of the association's hearty indorsement of Mr. Marks' bill whicn provides for an increase of 1 mill for. the maintenance mainten-ance fund. Encouraging reports were given by a number of speakers and altogether the outlook seems hopeful. A number of committees were appointed to work along different lines. These include the Press, Legislative, Real Estate association. associa-tion. Commercial club, School Board, Ladies' Literary club, and M. & M. association. as-sociation. It is evident that the teachers' organization or-ganization means business. Great earnestness ear-nestness was a feature of the entire proceedings. pro-ceedings. Printed statistics in abundance abun-dance were presented and distributed among those-present, who will use them in working for the bill. |
