By Ted Johnson 'Special to Telegrsm, DENVER, Colo.. June t. With br1rht skies and a irood dry road I again won the annual mountain marathon - of the Rocky Mountain Newa. Goln at a fast clip from start to finish 1 set m new record oY 1 hour, 4 minutes, 1 second, breaking my former record by 2$ seconds. It waa the fifth marathon I have entered and the third I have won. At the start 1 took third position for about three miles. Then 1 took the lead and gradually trained on the bunch and finished about three and one-half Works shead of the second man, Fred Duncan of Utile. on. Colo. The police protection offered was exceptionally ex-ceptionally good this year and none of the runners were hindered under any circumstances by automobile smoke or dust. Crowds lined the course the last , sight m.Lsa.Aftj-d rhr-'-til svh xunner re gardless of what state he came from. ; Many of my former friends were aflong I the course and cheered me heartily as 1 passed. Albert Warden, the Utah Intersrhotastlc champion, suffered cramps In hla sides at Intervals and was unable to hold the faat pace he had et for himself at the start of the race. He made a game showing however and easily took fifth place In the big claaalc. By doing so he won the service serv-ice medal that was awarded to the first enlisted man to cross the finish line. The officials of the race handled every detail In a splendid fashion and every-I every-I thing moved promptly on schedule time. We Utah runners slept fine the night before the raoe and were up early, en-Joyed en-Joyed a good breakfast and were ready for the grind. I hardly suffered any affects af-fects from nervousness during the raoe. ' times. I believe 1 waa In better shape I for the long grind than I hav ever been I In before. Throughout the race my legs I were In fine condition and I felt no cramps at any time. My muscles held out spten-, spten-, dldly and the same was true of my wind, i Herald D. Rhea set a tremendous pace for the first three miles and then stowed up, whereupon I took the lead from him and was never heeded after that. Rhea, who Is a brother In law of Duncan, finished fin-ished third, (hie of the biggest crowds that ever wltneased a mountain marathon lined the route over which we ran and a great mob of men and women were gath- ered at the finish itne. Fred Duncan and I, both married men. through winning first and second place, will be sent to the Ht. Louis championships champion-ships In Hep (ember with all expenses paid by the Rocky Mountain News. I ran under the colors of the Deseret gymnaalum of Halt Lake City, ft waa a wonderful race and 1 am proud to hav brought back the medal to Utah. |
