Show Pitt, Still Undefeated, To Face Nebraska Squad In JteataeJiastenLlilt By HERBERTWBARKER NEW Y01K, Nov. 8 (AP) The surprising development of last week's uncalled-for revolt of the football underdogs was that the fall of prime favorites caused so little change in national and sec- tional championship races. Of the 16 major teams which had boasted undefeated records only two, Baylor and Temple, were removed from that list. Conference Confer-ence or sectional ratings, except for the southwest, where Rice sup-' sup-' planted Baylor in first place, remained re-mained virtually unchanged. Nationally here's how the undefeated unde-feated list stood today: East Lafayette undefeated and untied; Pitt, Fordham, Dartmouth, Holy Cross, Villanova and Yale, each tied once. South Alabama, undefeated and untledr-DuM.-tled-oncE ' Middle west Nebraska, tied twice. Far west Santa Clara and Montana, Mon-tana, undefeated and untied; California, Cali-fornia, tied once. This week's program finds heavy stress laid on the intersections! angle, especially in the east, but vital sectional games will be played in-every conference as well. Prospects Pros-pects for the leading games are about as follows: East The principal spotlight falls on Pitt's battle with Nebraska at Pittsburgh. The Panthers were sheer dynamite as Goldberg. Steb-bins Steb-bins and Patrick smashed through Notre Dame's defense in a three- rlouchdownr four-perlod" surge lhar earned Pitt a 21-6 triumph last week. I Kansas Checks Cornhuskers In Hard-Fought Big Six Tie Nebraska, on the other hand, had! to come from behind to gain a 13-13 draw with Kansas in a major up- aet that left Nebraska's hopes ofi a third successive Big Six championship cham-pionship somewhat on the dim side. Notre Dame will invade the east to give battle to Army, which took advantage of a Harvard fumble In the fourth quarter to pull out a hardly-deserved 7-6 decision. Penn, outpointed by Penn State, 7-0, plays Michigan's Wolyerines, who had to score twice in the last four minutes to nose out Chicago, 13-13. Penn State tackles tough Maryland, Mary-land, 9-7 victor over Virginia Military Mil-itary on Pershing Mondorff's field goal. Harvard takes on Davidson and Duquesne, surprised by Carnegie Carne-gie Tech. 6-0, travels to Lubbock to face Texas Tech Thursday. The big domestic struggles of the day will find Dartmouth arrayed ar-rayed against Cornell and Yale gainst Princeton. Dartmouth spotted Princeton nine points and then won, 33-9, but the Indians can xpect trouble from Cornell. Well-rested Well-rested Yale, whose backfield ace, Clint Frank, scored all three touchdowns touch-downs in a 19-0 rout of Brown, will be strongly favored over Princeton. Undefeated Villanova, Holy Cross and Lafayette all look safe, while Fordham, an impressive array in a 21-3 victory over Purdue, takes Saturday off. Middle West Ohio State's 10-0 defeat at the hands of Indiana left Minnesota the only team still unbeaten un-beaten within the Big Ten conference. confer-ence. The Gophers, who overcame a 10-0 deficit to trounce Iowa, 35-10, 35-10, find Northwestern Wildcats, clawed by Illinois, 6-0, next in line. Kansas, bidding for at least a share in the Big Six title, plays Kansas State, while Missouri, whipped 14-7 by St. Louis, tackles Oklahoma, 33-7 conqueror of Iowa State. Michigan State and Carnegie furnish fur-nish the intersections! angle to the midwestern program. Southwest Rice, which conquered con-quered Arkansas, 26-20, on Ernie Lain's successful pass in the last 33 seconds of play, battles to hold its conference lead against Texas A. and M 14-0 victors over Southern South-ern Methodist. Baylor, victim of a 9-6 defeat by Texu on Hugh Wolfe's field goal, tackles S. M. U. Texas plays Texas Christian, nosed out by Centenary, 10-9, also on a field goal. I Strong Auburn Line Threatens Alabama's Bid for Grid Honors South Alabama had to resort to field goal by Sandy Santord to turn back Tulane, 9-6, and found Auburn's Plainsmen, featuring a brilliant line, a challenging menace to its bid for the Southeastern conference con-ference crown. Auburn thoroughly battered Tennessee, Ten-nessee, 20-7. Alabama plays Georgia Geor-gia Tech. which recently removed Vanderbilt from the unbeaten class. Auburn must meet Louisiana State's Tigers, who ran up a 41-0 count on Mississippi State. Duke and North California collide col-lide In the big test this week. Virginia Vir-ginia Military and Citadel, South Carolina and Furman, and William and Mary and Washington and Lee meet In other conference games. Virginia Polytech plays a former conference member, Virginia. Far West Despite the fact they were held to a scoreless tie by Washington, the Golden Bears of California still hold clear claim to the Pacific Coast conference lead. Stanford, which nosed out Southern South-ern California, 7-6, holds second place with Oregon State, the only other team with a real chance for the championship. California's next foe is Oregon, which whipped Washington Wash-ington State, 10-6. last week. Stanford meets Washington State and Oregon State plays Southern California. Washington and U. C. L. A. meet In the remaining conference confer-ence game. |
