Show SHOPS TO ADOPT FIVE-DAY WEEK Because of seasonal slackening of work. Union Pacific shop workers will go on a five-day week beginning begin-ning Wednesday, H. C. Mann, executive ex-ecutive vice president of ths railroad, rail-road, said here Monday. "Employes agreed this plan would be better than reducing the number num-ber of workers," Mr. Mann said. "Our seasonal peak has been passed and there Isn't enough work to keep all the men busy on the regular regu-lar schedule." Mr. Mann commented that the recent freight rate increase granted by the Interstate commerce commission com-mission was inadequate for western railroads. OGDEN Glen E. Parsons, district dis-trict vice chairman of the International Interna-tional Association of Machinists, said here that men in shops of the Union Pacific here are of the "general "gen-eral opin4on" they should be permitted per-mitted to vote on "whether the railroad shall reduce expenses through reducing forces or through reducing the number of working hours." Railroad officials said agreement to reduce the work week was reached at a meeting at Cheyenne, ' Wyo, with shop craft union chair- ! men. I |
