Says Grain Pit Official Trade barriers were described as a cause of war by Clarence Henry, education director for the Chicago board of trade, in an address tn the Kiwanis club at the Hotel Utah Thursday. "Some historians ascribe wars to1 politics, but they are economical," Mr. Henry said in assailing excessive ex-cessive tariffs. "World unrest is due to restraints of trade established by government agencies. The World War was to have made the world safe for democracy, de-mocracy, but now we find democracy democ-racy more imperiled than ever. "Only three democracies are left the United States, Great Britain and France. Italy has warred for her colonies, Japan now Is doing so, and Germany wants colonies." Mr. Henry said that last year's European production of nearly 2,000,000,000 busheds of wheat shows need for imports. Telling of functions of the Chicago Chi-cago board of trade, he said 86 per cent of contracts for future grain deliveries are handled there. "The pit Is 40 feet across and. in the last 10 years its business has amounted to (120,000,000 per square foot," he said. |
