Show American Ingenuity Inexhaustible Statements recently have been made that America would be found as unprepared for peace as It previously had been unprepared unpre-pared for war. Granting this to be a fact, even now that peace suddenly has come upon the country, there is no occasion for alarm. The United States will just as readily accommodate Itself to peace conditions as it ' did In becoming transformed, temporarily, from one of the mot, peace-loving nations into the r"test war machinery the world ever has known. Already American Ingenuity and foresightedness have been put to work with the obiefmeeting conditions that even will be new to this country by reason of the position into which the United States has been thrust as the result of the war and to solve problems, prob-lems, political and commercial, which are certain to arise from time to time. Among the first moves was the selection by the Investment Bankers' association of a group of financial experts to act as a committee com-mittee of foreign securities. As previously has been pointed out by The Telegram. America has become, as a result of the war, a creditor nation, which is a condition absolutely new to the republic. Throughout its history, and In its palmiest days of prosperity, it has, until now, been a debtor nation. For a number of years preceding the beginning of the world war there was sent abroad an average of f 5oo.ono,ooo, in one form or another, to discbarge the country's obligations. Today the situation Is exactly reversed, and for many years to come European nations principally America's allies will owe this country approximately half a billion dollars annually in interest alone. To offset this amount, which cannot be paid by these countries coun-tries without Incurring hardships, investments must be made in foreign for-eign securities. This will be one of the new conditions, and it is anticipated the committee recently named by the Investment Bankers' Bank-ers' association will readily solve any problems connected therewith. there-with. After what America accomplished between the time this country coun-try entered the war and materially assisted in bringing the great world struggle to a successful conclusion, it can be depended upon to solve all future problems and carry out all its obligations with theskme absence of arrogance and bluster that characterized all its dealings in connection with the war. |
