Show Hoppe Sets Cue Records In Defense of Title l i CHICAGO, Jan. 29,(UP) Willie Hoppe, the master billiard-ist, billiard-ist, who returned to competition to defend his title after a serious seri-ous attack of influenza today engages his second opponent in the world's three-cushion tournament after breaking two contest con-test records in his first appearance. He took Herb Peterson of St.' Louis over the jumps last night to defeat the newcomer to the billiards bil-liards "world series," 50-15 In 32 Innings. Thus he Ued the 1941 tournament record for best game and broke the previous records for time elapsed and low opponent's score. In addition, he scored a high run of nine, close to the tournament tourna-ment record of 11 held by Jake Schaefer Jr. of Chicago. Hoppe started slowly, scoring only two points In the first nine Innings, In-nings, just matching his opponent. He said he felt weak and the glare of the low-hanging lights bothered his eyes. Then he recovered his poise and began scoring while still holding Peterson almost scoreless. In the 19th Inning Hoppe ran nine.
