Show J ' ' ' -fealty Loys STj:rc lienors With Yale, MIcbKan ani:ta:f:rd in ttc First Rank. , from DeViver, but It la not likely that this will haprfn. From the t .owin?, Colorado tearna are completely cutciajsej In flte cf the victory of Boulder early In the sea-Bon, sea-Bon, and the Utah boya could apparently apparent-ly hold their own . with many of the teama of the Middle West. The champion teams of the entire country this year are undoubtedly Yale In the East, Michigan In the Middle West, Utah in the lntermountain, country, coun-try, amd Stanford on the coapt. ' The class games at the University have brought out any amount of good material, and chances for next year are very bright. fVV.l, the football season over, and f:r t:.e first time In the hisu.-y of the iarr.e In this State a Utah U:m deserves de-serves 'to be classed with the t.t in tLIa neck of the woods. The Uv of U. teara had a strenuous time before It covild get good football, but the boys got It at last, and the people of Salt Lake plainly showed that they appreciated appre-ciated the fact by the attendance at all the games this year. A year ago the team was dlsorgan-ized? dlsorgan-ized? the players were at odds with the ma-i who was supposed to be coach, anr"uch a thing as college spirit waa atso.utely unknown. Things looked cloudy In the west for the future, and a number of the people who understood and appreciated good football and college col-lege athletics In general almost despaired of ever seeing a change. However, a number of former athletes '.and men who love eport were formed Into an advisory athletic committee and gt clown to business, at once. R. H. Canning, D. A. Callahan, Dr. Plum-mer, Plum-mer, Prof. Eaton and Dr. Anderson were the men, and to them as much as to any other cause is the credit of this seasop'a team to be given. They got rid cf Harvey Holmes, who had had charge of the athletics at the University, Univer-sity, and engaged the services of Mad-dock Mad-dock of Michigan. When the season opened this year they began to work with Maddock not only to make a team, but to install spirit into the students generally. The ' material in September was not only scarce, but green, and It Mas hard to get any one out at all. They did not deepalr, however, and they have taught, the students something of-what college - spirit means, and made it mean something some-thing to get a 'Varsity letter and play on the team. The results of their work have been plain to all who have seen the games played, and to them, together to-gether with Coach Maddock, is all the credit due. ' Summing up the season, it would, appear ap-pear from the comparative scores that Utah this year classes with the teams of tha coast, or indeed outclasses thero with the exception of Stanford. It is de"7htful if they could trim Stanford th' i year, but they should by all means p, the Palo Alto bunch next year, and they will have an excellent chance of winning. Some talk was heard of pla-xing Stanford on their way back |
