Show There's Nothing ir. It. The trial of a young girl, Nan Patterson, is attracting at-tracting the attention of New York and the rest of the United States. She is charged with the murder of a parasite of society a bookmaker. He was J drunk when he was killed and was. in a cab with the girl. It is not known whether she killed him or ho committed suicide. - While the man was one of the most worthless that could be imagined, he had the right to live, and of course if he was murdered his slayer should be punished. At this distance it seems unlikely that the Patterson girl will be convicted, BUT SHOULD SHE BE SET FREE LIFE CAN HOLD LITTLE FOR HER EXCEPT WITHOUT THE PALE. - THE TRIAL IS A DISGUSTING EXPOSE OF HOW SOME PERSONS LIVE. The girl came of an honest family. She had been married, but,had . separated from her husband. She became a show girl. IT IS EASY TO GET ON THE STAGE WITH DRAMATIC ART AT ITS PRESENT STANDARD. A good figure and a pretty face are the only re-. re-. quisites with some companies. The Patterson girl had both. She had little to do in the productions in which she appeared, but off the stage she had plenty of opportunity to "see life," and she saw it. She met the bookmaker, a married man, and their shameful relations began, ne became infatuated with her, but she was' probably fonder of the money he lavished lav-ished on her than she was of the man himself. - That is the whole story. It is common enough, and because of its commonness we sometimes lose sight of the terrible tragedy of it. THE WOMAN IS DISGRACED, THE MAN IS DEAD AND HIS WIFE'S HEART IS BROKEN. IT IS A SAD END-. ING FOR LIVES THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN HAPPY AND RESPECTABLE. . There are many young girls who long for such a life as the Patterson girl chose. They have no intention inten-tion when they seek to begin it of doing anything wrong, but they want to "see life." There are plenty of ways to do it. The stage is only one. But with so-called so-called bohemianism, late suppers, wine and whispered whis-pered words that cause a fall before the victim realizes real-izes that there is temptation ; it doesnt take long. THE STORY OF THE PATTERSON GIRL NEEDS NO COMMENT. IT IS A GRIM AND SAD ENOUGH OBJECT LESSON. IT SAYS CLEARLY CLEAR-LY TO ALL YOUNG GIRLS WHO WANT TO SEE LIFE": DON'T DO IT. THERE'S NOTHING IN IT. |
