Show . Arbitrary Action cf Hancnent in Shutting: Out Best Teams Bound to D: Injurious. The news that five teams have with-V with-V drawn from the big six-day race was a great disappointment to the Salt Lake fans. There can be no outcome to the race npw which can be satisfactory. It Is expected that the withdrawal will cut down thu gte receipts at least one- half fronnthia time on. Munr and Walthour were the heavily heav-ily backed favorites In the event and were riding strong.' McLean and Bowler Bow-ler were nearly as popular In the public eye - and Newkirk and Mayo were counted on by their admirers all over the country to bring home first money. All are among the highest class riders In the country and their loss In this race will virtually ruin It. So far as the suspension by the N. C. A. goes It is a farce. Chairman Kelsey said: "I intend to make an example of these fellows," but the remark can mean nothing to the wise .ones but a four-flush. The Interest In cycling has died down to such an extent that the N. C. A. cannot afford to have Bobby Walthour, the great pace follower who has made the game in this country 'and Hugh Mc Lean who defeated him in a fifteen-mile race last Saturday out of. the game. The N. C. A. has few enough attrac tions to offer the public now and Chairman Chair-man Kelsey and President Batchelder know it and also know that they must be good or they will find themselves without a very well paying and easy Job. Newkirk and Mayo are,. one of the most popular teams in the country, and Bedell brothers are in demand in every sprint meet and Butler and Moran are old-timers who would not make a break like the one on Wednesday unless they were In the right. Pat Powers has lots of political pull, but that won't fill the eats In the Garden Gar-den at an uninteresting race. |
