Without With-out stopping work for" forty hours, ex- I hausted and choked with" smoke, the lumbermen and mountaineers of Cambria-, Somerset and Westmoreland counties are praying for rain to quench the forest fires that have been raging for a week. By almost superhuman efforts of the inhabitants and with the aid of fire companies, from Altoona and Johnstown, Johns-town, the villages and mills at Danlo, Vlntondale and Twin Rocks have been saved. Orr the Laurel Hill, In Westmoreland West-moreland county, several houses have been burned and loss of life was narrowly nar-rowly averted.
