Terhune is the defendant In an action-' begun ffy Charles Herbert of Matawan for $25,000 damages sustained, he alleges, at fha hands of a vigilance committee led by Mr. Terhune. A series of supposed incendiary fires of which Herbert was suspected of being be-ing the author occurred in Matawan two years ago. He testified that on the night of February 24, 1901. Terhune roused him from his bed and took htm to a, cowshed where, after being urged tv confess, he wa twice strung up to the rafters with a pair of plough lines. He also alleged! that he was badly beaten. |
