Show ADVERTISING NUISANCES. From Leslie's Weekly. It Is highly gratifying to note that a movement Is now in progress throughout through-out the country looking to the abatement abate-ment of billboard and poster advertising advertis-ing nuisances. The Legislatures of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois have measures under consideration imposing im-posing various restrictions upon this kind of advertising; and a large number num-ber of municipalities, including Chicago, Chica-go, Minneapolis, Washington, Buffalo, SyAicuse and Albany, have either adopted ordinances having the same object in view, or are proposing to do so. The ordinance proposed ln Albany is one of the best that we have seen relating re-lating to this abuse, and it might well be adopted in other cities which are considering local legislation of this character. It requires the advertiser or billposter who would set up a billboard, bill-board, first, to secure permission from the Commissioner of Public Works, and. secondly, to give a bond of $2000 to indemnify the city against any damages dam-ages that It may incur by allowing the board to be erected. The proposed ordinance or-dinance also seeks to limit the height of the boards to ten feetabrfve the ground when ten feet or more back of the lot line, and twelve feet when placed nearer. These are reasonable restrictions, and their rigid enforcement enforce-ment would go far to relieve communities communi-ties of the advertising abominations now thrust upon them. |
