Show SALT LAKE RISES FOUR INCHES IN PAST MONTH Water Level, Howcrcr, Is 2 Feet 1 Inch Lower Than It Was at This Time Last Year. - s3 ft Director Murdoch, after consideration of the subject from reports received today, said that the lake will be one foot higher this summer than it was last year, which will make the level greater than it has been since 1901. Great Salt lake is rapidly rising-, and In view of the fact that the weather of the past month has not been warm enough to melt the great quantity of snow on the moutnains. It Is believed that the lake will rise when the Jhaw comes to a level fully a foot or a foot and a half higher than it is "at present. The reading taJcen by the weather bureau yesterday shows a rise of four inches since the last correct reading was taken, February 15th, which makes the level of the lake two feet and ten inches below itero, and leaves the water two feet three inches lower than it was at this time a year ago. While a four-inch rise at this time Is considered remarkable when compared com-pared with previous years, the big rise is expected when the warm weather sets In and the snow commences to melt on the mountains. Last year the total rise of the lake was only ten inches, and that after this date. The rise for this winter has already been eight Inches, and it is believed that the spring thaw will raise the level one foot and possibly two feet more. Section Director Murdoch takes a conservative stand and estimates that the rise will be another foot, but old-timers who have watched the lake for years cay that according to the amount of snow on the mountains, the rise will be much greater than a foot. |
