The opening of the coal fields of Carbon county means cheaper coal for Salt Lake City and Utah. The operation opera-tion of these mines will mark the passing of ?5 coal in Salt Lake. S. H. GILSON TO THE TELEGRAM. - A movement is on foot to build a railroad rail-road about seventy-five miles in length from Springville to the coal fields in Carbon country, which, if carried to a successful issue, will be of the greatest Importance to Utah. It is said that these coal fleldsi, whn developed, will rival the great coat fields of Pennsylvania and produn enough coal to supply the world for a thousand years. The quality of the coal In these vast deposits is said to be unsurpassed. The deposits are so situated sit-uated that the coal can; be easily mined and at low cost, which will enable the operators to put it on the market at a price that will create an immediate demand de-mand for the entire output. Operators "Will Combine. The problem that confronts the owners own-ers of the deposits is that of transportation. transporta-tion. At the present time the cost of moving the coal to the market is so great that it cannot be handled with profit. To overcome this difficulty about sixteen of the large owners are now preparing to combine their interests and build a railroad into this coal region. It is estimated that the road, which will cost in the neighborhood of a million and a half dollars, will pay for Itself It-self in three years besides meeting its running expenses. S. H. Gilson of the firm of Mllner & Gllson, which owns some of the largest holdings in the Carbon country district, is in Salt Lake today on business pertaining per-taining to the proposed consolidation. With a Telegram reporter he discussed the matter freely. Owners Are Hopeful. "We ore hopeful of getting the road started within the year, and if we are successful In our efforts, and I assure you we have good reasons for taking an optimistic view of the matter, the road will be In operation within two years. "We have a representative in the East now negotiating for a loan to construct the road, and by the last advices received re-ceived from him he informed us that he did not anticipate any difficulty In securing the money. We are now about to incorporate so as to be able to act as a unit. Vast Deposits of Coal. "The people of the State do not realize what a vast quantity of coal is waiting to be mined in the Carbon county district, dis-trict, and what the construction of this road will mean to Utah. IT IS AN ACTUAL AC-TUAL FACT THAT THERE IS COAL ENOl'GH HIDDEN IX THIS REGION TO SCPPLY THE WOULD FOR A THOUSAND YEARS. The coal is of a good quality and will be easily mined. The steam coal cannot be equaled. It makes les ashes, contains less sulphur and less moisture than any other steam coal in the world. Must Build a Road. "At present we cannot get it to a market. The railroad will not handle it at anything like a reasonable figure, so we have been forced to build a roil ourselves. The demv.nd for this co;il will, we believe, justify the construction of the road and the opening of the mints. "It is my opinion that in a few years Utah will be supplying an the coal us. I in this Western country, and South America, too, for there is no coal that r know of on the South American "continent. "conti-nent. We will also supply the Pacific ocean steamships that touch on this coast. Output of 100,000 Tons. "The coal is so easy to get at that by the time the road is ready to move it I can be taking out 10,000 tons daily and at the end of another year I can increase in-crease the output to 100,000 tons dally. These -may seem like big figures, but they are correct. There Is a single holding hold-ing that will be in the combine that can actually be opened in sixty-five different differ-ent places and the coal loaded onto the cars with very little handling. "The route we propose to build the road over is an idenl one. I do not believe be-lieve a rock cut will be necessary any rlace on it. so you see the road can be built very cheaply. "The corporation papers are now being be-ing prepared, and will be signed in a few days, and the required loan negotiated. nego-tiated. I think I am safe In saying that this j-enr will see the construction of the road commenced and next year it completed." |
