Show FIRST FURNACE STARTS AT GARFIELD SHELTER The first furnace of the great Garfield melter was fclowa la yesterday and It working aa satisfactorily aa had been anticipated. an-ticipated. The event passed off without material celebration by the officials or cltlscna of Salt Lake, but nevertheless the significance of smelting operations on the shores of Great Salt Lake, carried on as is proposed "by- the American Smelting and Refining company at this point, must naturally have a far-reaching effect upon the Western mining world, for the better. ' The plant will cost several million dollars dol-lars before It is in working order to meet the requirements of the gold, silver and copper yields already in sight and Its enlargement en-largement Is planned to the extent that the mine development of the Intermoun-taln Intermoun-taln States demand. Inasmuch as the development de-velopment of mine throughout these States, particularly Utah, Nevada, Idaho and Montana, is proceeding more rapidly now than ever before, it is not regarded as at all unlikely that there will be many more months elapse before an approximate approxi-mate expenditure of $4,000,000 will have been made In bringing this smelter institution in-stitution up to the needs of the miners. , But it is principally of most importance import-ance at this time on account of the fact that the Garfield smelter is an emphatic indorsement of the wonderfully rich, extensive ex-tensive Bingham copper district, and of the magnificent Ely copper region. This Utter, however, is of secondary consideration, consid-eration, because Ely Is yet an undeveloped undevel-oped camp. Bingham, right at the doors of Salt Lake, is developed already to a marvelous degree and has assured the public that it is going to yield vast quantities quan-tities of copper ore for at least the entire en-tire life of the present generation. The management of the smelter com-' pany Is going ahead with the work of getting the plant In operation, and almost al-most dally other furnaces will be brought Into operation. |
