Smith hailed the driver, and when ' Elliott did not stop started in pursuit at a gallop. He came up with the auto-' auto-' mobile on Burnslde avenue, where the machine awerved to , the right, striking the pollceman'a mount. The horse went . over and at the same time the automobile automo-bile struck the curb and turned turtle, spilling out the occupants. Elliott was the least Injured of the occupants of the automobile and was arrested. - Just before the machine overturned Elliott El-liott made a frantic effort to protect Miss Evans. Mrs. Howard, who occupied occu-pied the tonneau, had leaned forward to clutch the seat in front. She was thrown from the side of the car.. She struck I the curb flagging, where she lay unconscious. uncon-scious. Smith, Mrs. Howard and Miss Evans were hurried to the hospital, where at is said that the recovery of the two former was doubtfuL Miss Evans suffered "more from shock, though her injuries may be more severe than at first reported. |
