James, Surgeon Sur-geon Snyder, Collector Williams of Illinois arid Tyo Privates Are Slain, MANILA ,Aug. 10. First Lieut. John F.James and two privates of the Eighth infantry, with Contract Surgeon Sur-geon Calvin Snyder and Internal Revenue Collector Williams Wil-liams of Illinois, were killed yesterday afternoon in a hand-to-hand fight with a force of Pula janes at Julita, " island of Leyte. The detachment, which consisted of ten . men, was greatly outnumbered, but made a gallant fight. " The Pulajanes captured three pistols, four Krag-Jorgen- sen rifles and 300 rounds of ammunition. WASHINGTON. Auf. 10. Julita. where Lieut. James and others were killed by Pulajanes, is a barrio, or ward of the city of Burauen. which has been the scene of three serious conflicts between the regulars, regu-lars, the constabulary and the Pulajanes within a few weeks. Contract Burgeon Calvin 8nyder was born in Baltimore. Md.. oa July 15. 1878, and entered the military service en Au-suit Au-suit 16. 1900. He had been on duty In the Philippines since December 8. 1900. Surgeon Sur-geon Snyder graduated from the University Univer-sity of Maryland Medical school in 1898. First Lieut. John F. James was born in Virginia on May 3. 1878, and entered the " army from that State. He was commissioned commis-sioned Second Lieutenant in the Eighth Infantry on April 10. 1890, and was made a First Lieutenant on February 2, 190L |
