The news that the famous fa-mous . Royal Hawaiian band from Honolulu is to give a grand festival week of music,' afternoon and even-ins; even-ins; concerts, commencing; wKh next Monday and up to the folio li s Monday, Mon-day, will be a source of Ueiight to many thousands. This superb organization is unlike any other band in the whole world, as It comprises not only a full military band, but also a stringed orchestra, a choir, a glee club, mandolin, guitar and banjo clubs, players of native instruments in-struments and solo singers. It numbers num-bers sixty musicians, each one being skilled In playing from five to ten instruments. in-struments. . l. Established In 1871. The band was established in 1871. by Capt, H, Berger, who still remains as director and who has taught the Hawalians how to play the various instruments. Capt. Berger was formerly for-merly in the German army as bandmaster, band-master, and was sent by the first Emperor Em-peror of Germany to Hawaii to establish estab-lish a military band at the request of that wise ruler. King Kamahamaha. The Royal Hawaiian band was the pet of King Kalakaua. and he lavished money, on it with a free hand. When Hawaii became a republic,- the Royal Hawaiian band was still maintained, and when the islands were annexed to the United States, the Hawaiian territorial terri-torial government saw that the band should not go out of existence. Twice In Fulled States. The Royal Hawaiian band has only visited the United States twice in its existence, and then for brief periods. pe-riods. It was the big feature of the Knight Templars conclave, held, in San Francisco twenty years ago. It came to this country last year to play at the Portland, Or., exposition and was a most pronounced success,' more than fifteen thousand people paying admission at each concert.
