"He came to me several times, be ! said, "and complained that he was being: persecuted by Thaw." "In what way?" "He told me that Thaw caused htm to be followed by detectives. He asked me If something could not be done to stop It." i NEW YORK, June 20. Both the jDistrict Attorney's office and the Counsel for the defense today are demoting de-moting themselves to the serious work j of preparing the evidence in the case Jpf Harry K. Thaw. The preliminaries have been completed. com-pleted. Since the killing of Stanford TWhite Monday night Thaw has been arraigned, has been before the Coro-'fher's Coro-'fher's Jury, formally charged with mur-'.tfer. mur-'.tfer. indicted, and yesterday added the final page to the first chapter of the ; court proceedings by appearing In the Court of General Sessions and person-aUly person-aUly pleading "not guilty." , Today finds airs. Thaw not only a ' trilling witness for her husband, but p an active assistant for his attorneys. . Yesterday she was under a rigid examination ex-amination by his lawyers for four hours, and related every incident of 'her life that may bear on the case. .fvVhen she had finished stenographers had nearly. 100 closely written sheets pt the story. The examination may be continued later. Mrs. Thaw's activl-.ties activl-.ties did not end here, for she assumed ' che roles of informant and inquisitor, securing the evidence of many young women who knew Stanford White and raiding her .attorneys in questioning others.. The State's "lawyers were In the -meantime as busy as Thaw's, and this '.morning they delved deeper and deep- ; er into the case, striking for the direct di-rect motive of the killing. Truxton Beale, , who was with White at the dinner which preceded the shooting, . has not . appeared as yet. and is believed be-lieved to be in Washington. His evidence evi-dence Is wanted to follow that of Thomas McCa'leb, who dined with the Thaws Monday night and who ap-.peared ap-.peared before the acting district attorney attor-ney yesterday. McCaleb was at the roof garden with the Thaws at the time of the shooting. From what could be learned McCaleb's story is interesting in showing show-ing that 3Irs. Thaw and he started to leave the roof garden before the shooting, and were on their way out when they heard the shots. McCaleb Is said to have sworn that when the shots were heard Mrs. Thaw snatched him by the arm and made this re-fnark: re-fnark: j "My God! He has shot him!" Just what reason McCaleb gave for Iheir starting to leave before the ooting could not be learned. He ti that he had gone to dinner with yiem at the Cafe Martin, described jhow they sat at the table and where JlVhlte sat The seat that White took was one facing Mrs. Thaw. McCaleb said that White's name, however, was J not mentioned at the dinner, and that be did not see any note passed between be-tween Thaw and his wife during the dinner. When they got to the roof garden ,'jie sat down with Mrs. Thaw. Thaw , after a while got out of his seat and left them. His statement covered vnany Important points, it is said, but every effort Is being made to keep all fhe evidence quiet until the trial. A somewhat startling statement was ynade today to the effect that the July . jrrand jury, which cornea In today, trill take up the Thaw case. It was the June Jury that indicted Thaw. No Intimation has yet been given About what feature of the case will be the subject of examination before the secret. Inquisitorial body, but it Is assumed as-sumed the District Attorney seeks to implicate another person In the crime. 'There can be no reason for another Indictment against Thaw," as the one actually in existence has not yet been attacked. As Thaw Is known to have fired the three shots that killed ' Mr. White, the announcement of further proceedings caused general surprise. i There are several subpoenas out--Jf 'rtandlng, and all Assistant District If Attorney Gar van was willing to say Tat night was that they were Issued for persons who would not voluntarily, present themselves for examination in the District Attorney's officeV'He . would not state what feature of the case he expects to learn from them, and he admitted that the July grand Jury would hear testimony relating to , the tragedy. Acting District Attorney Nott is still unwilling to hazard a guess as to the probabilities of a speedy trial. 7 "If wo hurry the case up," he said, J'the office will be attacked for favor-flng favor-flng a rich man. If we delay it, we vill be accused of postponing a murkier mur-kier case in the Interests of a rich man. that he may better be enabled to jthwart Justice." 7 De Lancey NIcoll of the law firm of Kcoll. Anable & Lindsay, who was ine of White's closest friends, and (who was often consulted by him, said -Se knew nothing of the murdered man's personal affairs. He admitted ' , .'.".. . . . . . |
