Show TRACTION COMPANY ASKS FOR FRANCHISE RENEWAL Proposes to Increase the Rates Charged for Electric ; Light and Manufactured Gas. At an Informal meeting held, Wednesday afternoon by Maypr Morris and . eight members of the City Council the application applica-tion of the Utah Light and Railway company com-pany for a renewal for fifty years of its franchise was thoroughly discussed. The life of the present franchise is thirty-two years. Those - present were Counctlmen Barnes, Martin, Preece. Tuddenham, Wood and President Hewlett. Le Grand Toung. who acted as representative represen-tative of the company, stated among other things that the company proposes to give the city land and water rights at the mouth of Big Cottonwood canyon at an estimated value of tloO.OK). The city's part of the Joint city and county building and the grounds are now lighted by the company com-pany free of charge. It is also furnishing power to run the elevator in the building. and Mr. Young promised that power will also be furnished free to run another elevator ele-vator which is to be Installed in the near future. The company will also put free lights Into the new public library and furnish fur-nish twentv-nve additional arc lights. The matter will be presented to the Council in the form of an ordinance at the next regular meeting. The proponed franchise also covers the franchise for the street railway and gas departments of the company on the same lines as contained In the. existing franchises. fran-chises. For arc lighting the rate is not to exceed 313 per month per light all night; Vt midnight mid-night service. For meter service it is li cents per kllowat hour and $1.S0 additional for care and maintenance. For incandescent lighting the charge la IS cents per kllowat hour and a minimum charge of $1.50 for each consumer. Manufactured gas for Illuminating, 12.20 per 1000 cubic feet. Water gas, or manufactured gas for fuel. $1.50 per 1000 cubic feet. The company agrees to pay to the city a license tax of $25 per car for the average number of motor cars operated. It agrees to furnish the city thirty horse-po.wer of electric energy for power, but not for lighting or heating. All the service transmission wires are to be placed underground in the district bounded by South Temple, Fourth South. West Temple and Stete. This is to be completed com-pleted in nine yearn after January 1, ,1906. Under the new franchise, the company raises the minimum charge to electrio light consumers. At present $1 a month is the least amount of light that a householder house-holder can use. The new system will raise this to $1.50 per month. The price of manufactured gas Is also raised from a maximum of $2 per 1000 feet to $2.30. One of thp franchises, granted to the Pioneer Electric company and assigned to the Utah Light and Railway company, obliges the holder to sell manufactured gas for lighting purposes at a price not to exceed ex-ceed $1.50 per 10CO feet, and for fuel purposes pur-poses not to exceed $1 oer 1000. |
