Show Death Penalty for Womin. There has been a lot of sickly sentiment over the tase of Mrs. Kate Edwards, the woman who has" been under sentence of death in Pennsylvania for ; the murder of her husband. Thousands of persons Jiave signed petitions asking that her sentence be : Commuted. Wednesday the Board of Pardons took .'action that deferred the execution and that will re-jeult re-jeult in a hearing of the case by the Supreme court. SChe action was no due to the hysterical appeals iu Ihe woman's behalf, however, but was taken because be-cause she had made a confession exonerating her liegro accomplice, also under sentence of death, from complicity in the crime. It is the intention to give him the benefit of whatever evideuce may be obtained from the woman and others. Of course, the idea of hanging a woman is repugnant repug-nant to many, but the law cannot distinguish between be-tween the sexes in a crime so grave as premeditated murder. Women murderers are rare, but there is no logical reason why they should not be punished he u they kill. Some persons always have -a fund of sympathy ready for murderers. They protest against the death penalty and are ready to sign petitions for comma-tatiou comma-tatiou of sentence or for pardon whenever the opportunity op-portunity presents. The death penalty U indeed a terrible thing, but so is murder. The sentimentalists never think of the agony and the fear suffered by the murdered one. They regard the murderer as more sinned against than sinning. We believe there should be capital punishment for first degree murder. Opinion is divided regard ing the death penalty and always will be, but In States where it is provided for no sloppy sentiment Should be allowed to interfere with its execution. |
