Show RAIN OP BULLETS DROPS ABOUT ALLEGED CHICKEN THIEVES; "SPOT" KING W. W. Baker, known in the criminal world as "8pot" King, Is under arrest on a charge of burglary. With him are confined Haps Jepperson, a Dane, 37 years old, employed as a porter, and C. H. Chapman, an Englishman, a laborer, who gives his age as 28 years. These men were arrested this morning by Patrolmen Pa-trolmen Sperry; Taylor and Heath, after af-ter they had watched for the men for four nights, and after a shotgun fusillade fusil-lade had been fired at the men at an early nour this morning. Daring Chicken-Thieves. For soma time residents in the" southwestern south-western part of the city have been terrorized ter-rorized by a gang of daring chicken thieves, who have stolen no less than 200 fine fowls during that period. One of the victims was Gov. Cutler, who not long ago fired several shots at the thieves as they were leaving his chicken chick-en coop with their plunder, but failed to hit them. Suspicion was finally directed toward the notorious "Spot" King, so called becauaa of a white lock of hair on the side of his head, and King and his companions, com-panions, C. H. Chapman and Hans Jep-person, Jep-person, were shadowed. Caught Bed-Handed. For four nights Patrolmen Sperry, Taylor and Heath watched the house occupied by these men, at 264 West Tenth South street, without results, until un-til last night, when they were caught red-handed. The policemen called upon the men to halt, when all broke for cover. The policemen, armed with shotguns shot-guns and pistols, opened Are, and captured cap-tured Chapman and Jepperson In a swampy plr.ee on Tenth South between First and Second West streets. During the fusillade a blacksmith named Brown, hearing the firing, ap-pearel ap-pearel at the door Of his house nearby, and fired his shotgun in the direction of the sound made by the explosion of the policemen's weapons. Bullets rained all about the policemen, but no one was injured. in-jured. Chapman and Jepperson were taken without great difficulty, but King escaped. es-caped. Capture of "Spot" King. Patrolman Sperry was left on watch the rest of the night, and at 11 o'clock this morning saw King walking In the toad, approaching his house. Sperry rode rapidly up to him on his wheel and dismounting, shoved his revolver into King's face and captured him without citticulty. King was found to be suffering suf-fering from a gunshot wound in his arm, caused by a pellet of lead from a shotgun. His clothing was pierced with many small shot holes. OSpot" King, as Baker is known, has served two terms in the Utah penitentiary. peniten-tiary. One of these was for seven years for burglary, and the last term was for one year for forgery. Patrolman Moore attempt-d to'capture Baker, having spotted hfm In the house of a West Side woman two years ago, but Baker learning learn-ing of the patrolman's presence fled by Jumping from a second-story window, without any clothes. Moore fired at him, but Baker made his escape. The police believe that they have a certain case against all three men. More than sixty chickens were recovered by the pollc last night. |
