A q r i y Y tit r s sJohn John Stevens as and composer 1 Versatile Youth From Kansas Goes Over Big With Hail Monarchs' Monarchs B By WENDELL ASHTON When the University of Utah band strikes up a new tune for tor its football heroes those strains mean more to one John ohn Stevens Steven than to any other gridiron gridron grid grid- iron ron man Stevens an Armenian boy from Wichita Kan starred on the freshman fresh resh man football team this fall and is now creating a sensation with his song hits A month ago while students were still talking about his prowess as center cen cen- ter er on the frosh eleven Stevens wandered wandered wan dered into the office of Rudy Lars Larsen en student body president Ive got something for you the cocky b but t likable exclaimed Lets have it Larsen startled but curious replied Its lt AH AU My Iy Own And the black haired black haired boy from the midwest began to croon Hall Hail to the he monarchs of the hills to our dear university my own song song music music words and all aU Stevens told the president after warbling the last note I I call caU it Hall Hail to the Monarchs and its it's taken me just two months to compose Larsen liked tl ti He asked pretty Miss C Charlene arlene to accompany Stevens while he crooned the words to a group roup of student officers They liked it Introduces New Song And so Johnny was invited to In In- Introduce traduce reduce his new Utah song at the the Utah-Colorado Utah assembly prior to football game It was a hit Since that time it has hu been sung ung at three student rallies at the school play and by the University glee club at a recent weeks week a performance at a s local ocal theater Stevens says say hes he's now composing another song The Braves of Utah which he hopes to have completed ina in ina ina a month or two He has little time timeto timeo to o spend at the piano knocking out new notes note for he works six hours a aday aday aday day at a downtown garage besides participating in athletics and taking a aleavy heavy leavy course at school Great at Experimenting I 1 nearly drive the boys at work and on the field buggy with my experimenting ex ex- ex he explained You know youve you've got to hum a line a thousand times or so before you know whether its it's going to fit or not noL Stevens plans to major in music at atthe atthe atthe the university although he cant can't yet playa play a tune on a single musical instrument ment H He uses one finger linger as he sounds out his songs on the piano Why did I 1 come way out west here for college Stevens answered I know too many people in Kansas A fellow cant can't study tudy if hes he's acquainted I with every everyone one at schooL
