I Deer Refuses to Use Bridge but Slides Down Cliff WATKINS GLEN S N. N NY Y Sept 6 UP The UP-The The deer which a small army of men have ha tried vainly to rescue from a natural prison on a n rocky ledge today essayed its own V escape and scampered of off into the safety of the forest At dawn today park gu guards were lowered to the led ledge te from the cliff liff above bove It w was their purpose purpose pur pur- pose to frighten the d deer er over a narrow bridge which h had d been constructed to give it a path to freedom dom Carefully they maneuvered the deer into position at the bridge bridgel fearing that a false move would would woula cause it to make a frantic leap into the chasm and death Instead the deer raced along the edge of the ledge picked out the place where the drop to the streambed was the least and slid safely down its forefeet braced against the soft sort embankment It was a foot 35 slide and the d deer er landed on its feet unharmed The deer then bounded nimbly nimbly- up the opposite chasm wall When the animal was first imprisoned on the ledge the stream below was flowing at torrential pace The deer and its mate jumped over 3 a pile of boulders onto the ledge to escape dogs The Them m mate te jumped into the stream and was killed The Thc stream today was was' just a trickle It took several hours today to maneuver the deer near the bridge It If responded calmly to urging but when the guards closed in to force it over the brid bridge c It il chose hose its own means of escape Its slide down the chasm wall was perfectly executed Once it g gained lined the top of the opposite chasm wall it ran it-ran ran up the stone steps of the thc tourist p path and dis disappeared into the forest
