Show J JUST I T I Q T t FOLKS fl T V 2 L t t THE SERPENT Slithered a snake across cross the grass And strangely as I watched it pass Weird music seemed to fill the air An ancient priest intoned a prayer Within a temple where a crowd In curious adoration bowed owed p Great serpent heads were carved in stone With fangs extended jaws wide thrown As true as human art could make Was Vas graven many a granite snake And thousands in that holy hour Paid homage to the serpents serpent's power Then ninety steps above a maid Appeared in robes of white arrayed And to the toms tom solemn beat She walked Deaths Death's agony to meet A human sacrifice to please The rain god and his rage appease Slithered a snake across my path 1 I thought of gods that ruled in wrath And temples long since overthrown Adorned with serpent heads of stone And the lust blood-lust which made nude religions grow Some seven thousand years ago |
