OCR Text Your Baby And Mine B By MYRTLE MEYER ELDRED WHAT IS RIGHT WAY TO CURB BITING AND SLAPPING Babies arc lre just babies and their tricks and actions arc are comically alike Hold a baby of about one year in your arms and if is a string of or bright beads dangling around your neck or a n shining pair of glasses on your nose or a bright pencil or pen penIn penin penin in sight the baby will vill grab rab for tor it Parents arc are wont to nip this particular lar br tendency in the bud by saying sayin with increasing irritation Stop that Dont Don't do that BABY DOES LIKEWISE But bright beads arc always more effective stimuli than sharp words so baby persists and hauls and pulls in his effort to get the bright object Tired of inaction the mother slaps This leads inevitably 1 to the next step in which baby slaps back And oh how angry this affront to her di dignity makes his mother This time she gives a n really hard smack one calculated to show him once and for all that this Is a game came nt at which he has no chance of winning But baby has other tricks up his sleeve He can bite He has been sinking his small sharp teeth into rubber rings and unresisting toys tos He takes a nip of mothers mother's hand hond or arm armand armand and is rewarded by a sharp cry of distress and another explosion of temper It H is hard to say whether the thc temper display or the bitable flesh or both foster this habit but some babies develop biting as their most effective weapon i. i heard of o one baby who crawled about the floor Unemotionally unemotionally un Un- emotionally biting the ankles of unsuspecting unsuspecting un un- un suspecting visitors Mothers still clin cling to the idea that if they can punish their babies harder than babies can punish them they'll squelch these tendencies They always al al' always ways think that until they have tried It to the point of fostering ugly dispositions dispositions dispo dispo- and complete incorrigibility At this point they always ask for help They say pathetically Ive slapped and spanked and arid even bitten him lim m myself but he still bites biles me or orlis his lis playmates or even the dog and cat when the impulse seizes him Grabbing at bri bright ht objects slapping slapping slap slap- ping at people biting them are arc re all natural developments of childhood Find the child who has never done any of them Isn't it silly and illogical illogical cal for parents to attempt to teach I Ia a child NOT to slap or bite by using 1 the same weapons against him Such actions are arc no more pleasing when done in revenge re to the child than when done as experiments in conduct conduct conduct con con- duct by the child himself ISOLATION Put the child from you rou when he grabs crabs at your possessions Furnish Him something just as attractive which he can enjoy in peace If he slaps put him down immediately and show by your disapproval not disapproval not by another another an an- other slap that slap that this is behavior he cant can't continue Do the same with the he b biting ting Isolate him from companions companions compan compan- ions take away avray the dog or cat remove remove re re- re move yourself from Irom him In spirit as aswell aswell well as body when he acts in this way Babies learn very quickly not to repeat the acts which deprive them of pleasant companionship The baby knows he has been gu guilty of an act meriting adult disapproval an and he is in no hurry to repeat it This is just justas as effective punishment If immediate as repeating the childs child's act with the infuriated command not to do it again What's more it is accomplished without without without with with- out loss of parental dignity or prestige prestige prestige pres pres- tige possessions which a parent should treasure and preserve Tomorrow Well Tomorrow Well Fed Baby Will i. i Not Suffer From Colic
