Show a new pig iron record with 17,988 net tons, as compared to a pre-" vious high of 17,973 net tons in August, 1947. Work will start this month on expansion of facilities at Geneva to produce hot rolled steel in coils. The program will cost a minimum of $18,600,000 and it is expected that some coils will be rolled by i the end of the year. This product ; will be sent to the Columbia Steel Co.'s new Pittsburgh, Cal., plant for conversion into cold rolled sheets and tin plate and to a pro- i jected new mill in the Los An- j geles area for conversion into cold j rolled sheets. RECORD ATTAINED 4 AT GENEVA PLANT Several new production records were set in January by Geneva Steel Co., U. S. Steel Corp, subsidiary. sub-sidiary. The Geneva plant produced 107,-949 107,-949 net tons of steel ingots and castings. Previous high was 102,-260 102,-260 tons in December, 1947 Finished Fin-ished steel plate production for the month was 56,059 net tons, corn- spared to a previous high of 53,919 for last December. New records also were set for pig iron and furnace coke with a production of 84,949 net tons of pig iron and 76,780 net tons of furnace fur-nace coke. The previous record month was last December, with 80,137 net tons of pig iron and 73,-518 73,-518 net tons of coke.
