Show Crucial Period For Mature Does Here; Deer Count Started The crucial period for mature does is at hand, and what the loss will be in the congested areas for this winter remains to be determined, according to R. L. Turpin, Utah Fish and Game Director. Di-rector. We know that the deer have suffered this winter, and while we feel that the loss in fawns has been checked, we will not know how the larger does will fare until our spring loss period is over and a cross check made of the congested area winter ranges. Turpin pointed out that the fawns are always hit hardest in the heavy snow periods because they cannot get into the best feed. Usually, Turpin explained, the big deer take the choice shrubs at a level higher than the fawns can reach. This leaves the smaller deer without anything but the course stuff which often is too large for the young animals to digest. The State started its annual deer count last week, riding the Beaver area first. The counts will move forward as weather per- rtiito |
