There have been many stranger "champions," such as No. 1 gatecrashers, gate-crashers, and flagpole sitters. And many seemingly queer fancies and fads of young people have paid off handily in later years. Berry Pink shot marbles. He proved too good for his school pals so he set out to conquer new fields. He had the urge to become a champion "migger" and he did become champ in a big way. He earned the title of Marble King of the World. i Then he stopped shooting marbles and became a manufacturer manufac-turer turning out as many as a million "migs" a day. As a sideline, side-line, he collects rare marbles from all over the world. The collection totals around 4000 and some of the precious stones are nearly 1000 years old. 7"EE LAWNHURST had an urge to hum. Singing didn't appeal to her a bit but she did love humming. hum-ming. Words couldn't interest her so much as the tune. She would hum through all the tunes she knew, and then hum a lot of others besides. It was hard work sitting quiet until school got out. Years later she was writing a new song tune every few days, and selling them for good prices. She would jot down notes for tunes on cafe menus, old letters, wrapping paper anything ' that was handy while a new dance rhythm wandered wan-dered around in her head. UCY CLAUSEN was a bug collector. col-lector. She liked bugs dead or alive, and always had plenty of pests for her pets. At 25, her hobby hob-by had become a business for she was housekeeper to hundreds of bugs. Her work consisted of raising rais-ing specimens and to do this she had to be an expert bug dietitian. Once her roaches went on strike' because they objected to her monotonous mo-notonous banana meals. So she had to treat them to spinach to get them to behave. If you have a hobby, play it for all it is worth. If you have an urge, or an itch, to do something unusual, do it. Your hobby must satisfy an inner desire within you and it should not interfere with anyone's happiness. If the hobby seems right and proper, by all means give it full play. Some day it may pay off. |
