Robinson Talks On Club Objectives Grant Thorn, Postwar Problems Springville Lions spentv a profitable profi-table and interesting meeting last Thursday evening at Valley Tavern, Tav-ern, directed by Dr. C. A. King, president with Ralph Harmer,' toastmaster, reports Vernon Cas-tleton, Cas-tleton, publicity chairman. After a fine dinner, musical numbers, consisting of an instrumental instru-mental duet by Ralph Weight and Will Parry, with Mrs. Maurice Bird, accompanist, and readings by Bliss Harmer of Mapleton, were enjoyed. Joseph ' Robinson of Lehi, district dis-trict governor, surprised the club with a visit and spoke briefly on the Lions code of ethics and objectives, ob-jectives, pointing out how they tie into world, national and community com-munity affairs to promote better citizenship. Lt. Mays W. Anderson held the group spellbound as he related his capture by the Germans until his escape into Russia. He told of his narrow escape from bombs and shells from Allied guns as they pulverized various targets along the way to the prison camp. He told of his treatment by the Germans, of the food in the camp, and of his escape and how he was treated by the Russians. Grant Thorn gave a short but inspiring talk on post-war problems. prob-lems. He listed six major problems prob-lems as: first, labor and management, manage-ment, stating that in pre-war times management dominated labor la-bor but during the war it has swung to the other extreme. He listed the national debt as the second problem, stating that the debt owed by every citizen of the United States is just as real as if he owed a grocery store and it amounted to thousands of dollars. dol-lars. Racial prejudices were listed as the third major problem to be solved, and the speaker dwelt briefly on this subject. The fourth problem, he said was isolationism, the fifth, security vs. the element of chance, and the sixth is the problem on which the solution of all other problems is predicated, "The Taking of Religion Re-ligion Into the Conference Table." In an effective closing to his talk, he quoted the Lord's Prayer. The next meeting of the club is scheduled for May 10, the program of which will be announced next week. |
