Show ire Our Children Milled To Be Safe From Fires? Many reports have come to the attention of this newspaper that the grade schools in Springville are not safe from a standpoint of fires. The devastating hotel fires which have occurred in various parts of this country the past few weeks, brings forcibly to the people of this city the possibility possibil-ity of such a catastrophe in Springville. Noting that wooden stairways exist in at least two of the elementary grade schools of the city with the furnace situated directly beneath, the Parent-Teacher Parent-Teacher associations have asked for fire escapes at the schools. However, the pleas of the PTA have been ignored by Superintendent Barnett, and it appears that this city 'must experience some sort of a tragedy before he realizes the importance of eliminating fire hazards which exist at present. This paper feels that it is the responsibility of the mayor and city council of Springville to have the building inspector make an inspection of the several school buildings to determine whether or not they are safe for the boys and girls of this city in regard to fires. If they are safe, a report should be given to that effect, and if they are not safe, the city should condemn them and not allow their use until the Nebo school district puts them in such condition as w ill be safe for the students of this city. It would take just one fire in a Springville school , building to bring irreparable loss and tragedy to this ! community. i |
