Show MOVE UNDERWAY TO DECREASE MOTORIST'S TAX Highway groups of the nation have started a drive to remove high taxation against the motorist. It is pointed out that to own and operate a new car one year, the average worker making $48 a week must work two and a half weeks just to pay the taxes on the vehicle. Before the war, 70 per cent of the nation's passengar cars were owned by families earning less than $2,000 a year. Taxes levied lev-ied against highway users in 1946 brought in more than one-fourth of the revenue raised by states that year. , Sales taxes amounted to only 18.44 per cent and income taxes to 17.02 per cent. The state auto levy was in addition to federal fed-eral excise taxes, local taxes and indirect taxes. |
