Show U-BOAT THREAT MET WITH INCREASED EFFORT Americans may be interested in a communique of the German high command, which, in telling of ships sunk along our coast, boasts that the results were obtained "despite the fierce American defense." This is interesting in view of the opinion, often expressed, that the United States is doing nothing about the U-boat menace, with the sly suggestion that if the navy and other officials would wake up, the U-boats would be driven from our shores. The truth is that since the first merchantman was torpedoed, there has been an increased effort to combat the U-boat threat. As fast as men, ships, planes and munitions mu-nitions have become available, they have been thrown into the cam- paign against commerce raiders. |
