Show HENDERSON ASKS MORE FUNDS TO CONTROL PRICES Leon Henderson, price administrator, adminis-trator, ran into trouble when he asked congress to appropriate the $161,000,000 which would permit him to employ a staff of 66,000 persons to enforce the price control con-trol act. While the price administrator originally requested $210,000,000, the budget bureau cut this amount to $161,000,000, which he now seeks. The house of representatives provided only $75,000,000 and Mr. Henderson worked hard to persuade per-suade a senate committee to give him $86,000,000 additional. The price administrator believes that he needs the men to control prices and rents and administer ra tioning regulations. We have no information along this line, but if the job can be done for $161,000,-000, $161,000,-000, the appropriation will be a good investment. In fact, Mr. Henderson Hen-derson claims that his agency has already saved the government $200,000,000 by controlling the price of steel- We think it very important that the office of price administration receive sufficient funds to employ nil the personnel to enforce its controls con-trols and regulations. We have little lit-tle faith in the conclusions of Representative Rep-resentative Cannon that the consumers con-sumers "will see to it that they are not overcharged and that thus the act will be self-enforcing." Moreover, More-over, we take little stock in the "anger" of senators, primarily incensed in-censed over "X-gasoline cards" and the appointment of "political enemies" ene-mies" to the OPA staff. |
