Show 'FOREST SERVICE ADVISES ON FIRE PREVENTION Public Urged To Cooperate In Protecting Watersheds From Fires At This Season Watersheds on the national forests for-ests of Utah are the most important impor-tant natural resources in the state. In the past thousands of acres of watersheds have been destroyed by fire all over the state. Practically all of these fires have been caused by human carelessness. Each year the forest service spends thousands of dollars in suppressing fires that are carelessly started on the low foothill range from Provo canyon to Santaquin. These fires spread rapidly in the dry cheat grass and run high up on the mountains before be-fore they can be controlled, destroying de-stroying everything in their path. Later in the season we have heavy thunder showers and then the desolation deso-lation begins. With no vegetation to hold the water, it rushes down the slopes, carrying away the entire en-tire vegetable soil, causing floods which destroy valuable property. Employees of the forest service are charged with the responsibility of protecting your watersheds. We believe that you can help us out to a great extent in preventing grass and brush fires in the locality in which you live, by helping us to educate the people to be more careful with fire and to see that children are not allowed on the foothills with matches. A large per cent of our fires have been caused by children playing with matches. The state fire law makes it unlawful un-lawful for anyone to burn any grass on brush land in the fire district either on private land or public land between May 21, 1942, and October 31, 1942, without a written permit from a deputy fire warden. Your cooperation in assisting in preventing, controlling and suppressing sup-pressing these fires .will be greatly great-ly appreciated. If fires do start you should call at once by phone, collect, 29 (forest service office, Provo) and report the fire. If it is possible foe you.r,.o get to the fire and put it out, this should be done after the fire has been reported. re-ported. In case of severe fire, notify no-tify Springville fire department. |
