Show HAROLD BISSELL MAKES GULF STUDY AT L.S.U. Harold Bissell, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bissell of this city, and graduate student in the school of geology at" Louisiana State university, uni-versity, was one of the assisting geologists to Dr. Dana Russell on his recent research expedition in the Gulf of Mexico. Sailing on the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey ship, the "Hydro-grapher," "Hydro-grapher," the geologists are making mak-ing a study of the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. The samples of mud they secure may reveal to scientists scien-tists the history of the formation forma-tion of land which is now ocean floor. In an elaborate account of the work being done, printed in the Morning Advocate of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, may be found the following statement: "Harold Bissell, graduate student stu-dent in the school of geology, studied the organic content of sediments found in the cores. As a result of his research, , he found that many of the beds cored contained con-tained sufficient organic matter to be considered a possible future source of petroleum. "Says Mr. Bissell: 'Many of the beds contain 4 per cent organic matter, which is considered sufficient suffi-cient for source beds, and are more than six inches thick. Since they are buried at depths of as much as ten feet, induration probably prob-ably will proceed without further loss of organic matter.' " Two papers setting forth the results re-sults of research done on the 2 9 cores were presented by Dr. Russell Rus-sell and Mr. Bissell at the meeting of the Geological Society of America, Am-erica, held during the Christmas holidays in Austin, Texas. |
