Show English Contractor Describes War Horrors .L. The following letter was received receiv-ed from W. Ress Jeffreys, chairman chair-man of the Roads Improvement association of Sussex, England, by Mayor A. O. Thorn. Mr. Jeffrey's has visited both India and the United States and many other countries to study the problems of transportation. He was appointed one of the representatives rep-resentatives of the British government govern-ment at each of the eight International Interna-tional Road Congresses held during dur-ing the past 2 8 years, and was also Honorable Secretary of the London Congress: Dear Mr. A. 0. Thorn: Your press has given you some idea of the hard and difficult struggle through which we are passing. The spirit of the British people is magnificent and the sacrifices sac-rifices they are making are great, but we do not hide from ourselves the fact that w shall need all the help we can get to defeat the German-Italian attack. You will appreciate how closely the war 'touches us all if I tell you that- 1. My office in southwest London Lon-don has suffered from bombing; 2. My works in Surrey have been rendered roofless by bombing; bomb-ing; 3. In Sussex we are kept awake at nights by aeroplanes and exploding ex-ploding bombs. Dog-fights between our own and enemy planes are common. Victims have been succored suc-cored by our Wivelsfield Red Cross Detachment, of which my sister is Hon. Treasurer; 4. My brother's house on the Suffolk coast and all his possession posses-sion therein have been reduced to ashes by an aerial torpedo. We do our best for the sufferers suffer-ers and among the innumerable appeals that reach us are: 1. The Lord Mayor's Fund for the relief of people who have been rendered homeless in London. Lon-don. The distress in London is great. 2. Various Spitfire Funds, one of which we have started in our village of Wivelsfield. You may be not only willing but glad to "pass the hat round" among your acquaintances for contributions con-tributions to one of these Funds. If you collect $20,000, the cost of a single aeroplane, send it direct di-rect to Lord Beaverbrook, Ministry Minis-try of Aircraft Production, London. Lon-don. If you collect a hundred dollars dol-lars (just as welcome) send it through your bank to me co my bankers, the National Provincial Bank, 15 Bishopsgate, London, E. C, and I will add it to the Wivelsfield Wiv-elsfield Spitfire Fund, or send it to the Lord Mayor's Fund at the Mansion Houes, or to the Wivelsfield Wivels-field Red Cross Fund, or to some. War Fund urgently needing help, or divide it as you direct. Yours Sincerely, W. REES JEFFREYS. P. S. As a fellow member of the A. R. B. A. the enclosed proposal for cooperation between the governments gov-ernments of the U. S. A. and Gt. Britain to give India the Roads and Road Transport she needs will appeal.
