Dr. Rex Whiting Gets Promotion Dr Rex Whiting, son of Mr. and Mrs Bert Whiting of Mapleton, has been, made a lieutenant in the U S Navy, and is stationed somewhere in the South Pacific. He enlisted in the service in April of 1943 end left for overseas duty in January, 1944. Dr. Whiting's wife the former Florence Merrill, is with his parents at Mapleton. Several Local Boys Leave Among the Springville boys who fore going to Hondo for his advanced ad-vanced training. Richard Johnson Visits In Springville Richard Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard M. Johnson, has returned to the army air base at Syracuse, N. Y., after spending a week's furlough with his parents and other relatives and friends in Springville. Gets Cable From Husband In England Mrs. Finley Roylance this week received a cablegram from her Tusband stationed "somewhere m England," stating that he had arrived ar-rived safely. It is believed that he landed in England about June 16th. Capt. Grant Nielson Visits Home Town Captain Grant Neilson has been transferred from the hospital at Rome, Ga., to Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, for treatment treat-ment of injuries 'suffered on the the battlefront in Italy. He visited the latter part of the past week with his father, J. C. Nielson, and other members of the family here. Air Corps Officer I Is Transferred Lt. David B. Welch, son of Mr. and Mrs.' D. B. Welch, was recently re-cently transferred from the air base at Lincoln, Nebr., to Dyers-burg, Dyers-burg, Tenn., where he is taking combat training as a co-pilot on' a Flying Fortress in the capacity of engineering and oxygen officer. Dr. Joseph L. Pace Gets Promotion Dr. Joseph L. Pace, flight surgeon sur-geon in the Navy Air Corps, has been promoted from lieutenant (j. g.) to lieutenant, stationed with the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Monterey somewhere in the South Pacific. Mrs. Pace, the former Pauline Clyde, is making her home here while her husband is in the service. Local Service Man Visits Springville Paul Eggertsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Max Simkins Goes To Texas Camp Max Simpkins, with his wife, has recently returned from New Orleans, La., where they went after af-ter spending a few weeks here. Cpl. Simkins was releaced from the hospital there and transferred to the air base at Abilene, Texas. Mrs. Simkins will remain here for the present. Cart Miller Is On Furlough Here Carl Miller, with his wife, has returned from camp in Louisiana and will spend a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Miller, and other relatives and friends here. Mapleton Man Is Overseas - ,- . - Lt. Evan Allan, son of Mr. and Mrs. James G. Mapleton Man Gets His Wings Delmar Whitney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey A. Whitnel of Mapleton Maple-ton is a member of a class of Student Stu-dent Officers and Aviation Cadets who were graduated this week from the Army Air Forces Pilot School at Stockton. Field, Calif. He has been made a full-fledged Army Air Forces pilot, and has gained the coveted silver wings. He will be placed on active duty with the Army Air Forces. Before entertaing the final advanced ad-vanced course at Stockton Field, he completed 18 weeks of primary and basic training at Twenty-Nine Palms, Bakersfield, Calif. His wife was present at the graduation and accompanied him months-old daughter for the first home where he saw his little six-time. six-time. Completes Study As Aviation Mechanic Burton A. Harmer, son of Mrs. A. W. Harmer of this city, has completed his course of study as an aviation mechanic in the army air forces technical training school at Amarillo, Texas, being sent to an air base where he will assist in keeping , America's Flying Fortresses For-tresses in the air. Armed Forces Interesting Letter 'rniu From Morris Bird The following interesting letter was received by Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Bird from their son Morris, who is stationed with the Intelligence Intel-ligence department of the Army Air Corps. "Dear Folks: "Just a short note to let you know that we have everything under control over here. - v "My home is in a hole five feet deep and long enough to sleep in, it is under an apple tree that has just begun to get small apples on it. This is where I eat, sleep and in fact, spend most of my time. "Our squadron was the first Air Force outfit over here and we are all quite proud of the fact. We are ground support for the Infantry so we move up to the front just as fast as the ground forces advance. ad-vance. "I was across the runway to the Melvin L. Whiting Writes From New Guinea Melvin L. Whiting of Mapleton writes that he is now in New Guinea and expresses his thanks for the Herald, stating that he does appreciate what the people are doing to make it possible for the service men to know what is happening at home" and to read where the boys are and what they are doing. Dick Wightman And Family Visit Here j Lt. and Mrs. Richard R. Wight-man Wight-man recently came from Hastings Hast-ings Nebr., where he has been stationed, and visited relatives and friends here for a few days. Roy Tew Is Commissioned I Roy Tew, son of Mr. and Mrs. William T. Tew of Mapleton, has graduated at Hondo, Texas, army air corps school and received his commission of second lieutenant and his wings as a navigator, according ac-cording to word received here. He has now been sent to Florida, to attend a radar school. He went into the service in June, 1943, and trained at Kearns, Utah, at Pullman,' Wash., Santa Ana, Calif., Las Vegas, Nev., be- Jay Thorpe Gets Navy Promotion Jay N. Thorpe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thorpe, was recently promoted to a radio technician, according to word received here, and is on a ship operating from the east coast. William Fullmer Made Sergeant William M. Fullmer of this city has been promoted to a sergeant in the army, stationed in England, Eng-land, according to word received here. He is serving with a bomber squadron. Ray Clark Is Moved To Colorado "I just arrived here at Mather Field, Colo., yesterday and I am making it a point to get you my new address as quickly as possible. possi-ble. Local Man Goes To Gunnery School "I have Deen eliminated from Pilot training for failure to meet the prescribed army standards of flying, and have been sent to Las Vegas to take up gunnery. I will be here for about six weeks. "I had a delay enroute to here and spent part of it with my wife and daughter in Madison, Calif., also at her parent's, and the last part I spent in Springville, but I didn't get a chance to stop in at the Herald office while I was there.
