Show Each Person Gave $71.87 to State During Past Year The total of $49,948,000 collected by tho state of Utah and passing through the state treasury in the fiscal year 1951, represented a contribution averaging $71.87 per person, according to the Bureau of the Census of the United States Department of Commerce. A bulletin bul-letin of the btfreau, giving some I facts regarding the operation of state governments throughout the United States has just reached the office of the Utah state tax com-mision. com-mision. The $71.87 per capita average compares with an average for the nation of $59.38 in taxes levied for state governmental purposes. Louisiana, Lou-isiana, with a per capita of $97.50 was highest among the states in revenue collected through the state treasury; and New Jersey was lowest with only $34.46 per capita. The census bureau warns, however, how-ever, that caution must be exercised exer-cised in attempting to draw con clusions from direct comparisons of financial amounts for individual state governments, for several reasons; among which is the fact that some state governments directly di-rectly administer certain activities activi-ties which elsewhere are undertaken under-taken by local governments, with or without state fiscal aid. "One of the significant facts shown in the report," said Patrick Healy, Jr., chairman of the Utah tax commission, "is that in each individual state the total general revenue, of which tax yields form, on an average, about 72 per cent, shows an increase in fiscal 1951 as compared with fiscal 1950. |
