Show "Springville Man Made Commander OfA 9424th ARS Major Donworth V. Gubler, of Spring-ville recently with the US-AF US-AF Reserve has been assigned commanding officer of Flight A 9424th Air Reserve Squadron with headquarters- in Provo. He suc-ceds suc-ceds Major Cleve Bingham who has been acting Flight Commander since May, 1955, and is now a turn foreman at the Anydrous Ammonia Ammon-ia plant at Geneva. Major Gubler assumes command of Flight A with a rich background in the United States Air Force. He received his early education in Hurricane, and later attended Dixie Dix-ie Jr. College. He filled an LDS mission in Germany from 1936-1939. 1936-1939. His military career began when he joined the Air Corps as a cadet in 1942. During World War II he flew 28 missions over Germany as a bombardier. The last six missions mis-sions as Group bombardier. He was then assigned as a navigation instructor in-structor and served as a member of the Standardation Board at , Midland, Texas. After relief from active duty he attended BYU and served as an assistant in the language department. depart-ment. He was a member of the language staff after graduating with a Masters degree. Major Gubler was recalled to active ac-tive duty in -Sept. 1950 and attended atten-ded the Russian language school at Syracuse University for one year. He then completed a Radar Training course and was assigned to a combat reconnaisance crew operating out of Japan. His last year of active duty was in the capacity of Education Officer for the 5th Heavy Reconnaisance Group at Travis AF Base, Calif. Major Gubler has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Cam-paign Medal, European, African, Middle East Campaign Medal. j At the present time he is teach- ing Russian and German at the BYU. He is married to the former Harriet Mace of Kanab and they have seven children, making their home at 312 West 1st North in , this city. |
